  2. You are so spot on with this post. Mitchum was terribly underrated his entire career. It might have been that he didn’t want to be seen as a “star” or one of the Method actors that came along shortly thereafter. His resume shows workmanlike performances with subtle nuances that better actors might not have imbued in their performances. Jane Greer, although not someone who was predominant in the field, has a voice that feels like a boxer’s left hook and knocks you right out. And Kirk Douglas seems like he is in “mid-season form” despite it being an early work.
    The lighting, the cinematography, the dialogue — all top quality. Next to some of my favorite work with Humphrey Bogart, this really stands out.
